
Former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Oceanic Bank International Plc, Dr. Cecilia Ibru, has unveiled two books: Cecilia: The Autobiography of Cecilia Ibru and Oceanic Odyssey (1990-2010), which chronicles her tenure as CEO of Oceanic Bank.
The event held at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos to mark her 79th birthday, had in attendance the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II; Secretary to the Lagos State government, Bimbo Salu-Hundeyin; Managing Director of UBA, Oliver Alawuba; Chief Ade Ojo, Chairman of Elizade Motors, Chief Ade Ojo, Publisher of The Guardian Newspaper, Lady Maiden Ibru, Chief Executive Officer of the newspaper, Toke Ibru, Senator Ede Dafinone, Charles Mekwunye, Prof. Anthony Kila, Dr. Nduka Buno among others.
Speaking at the event, the author said the two books are more than words on paper; they are reflections of her being, and also the story of her life. It is a testament of the journey and triumphs over difficulties.
“They are a testament to the triumphs, trials and unwavering faith that have sharpened and shaped me into who I am. Give it some open window into the experiences, values and lessons that have defined my personal experiences and professional endeavours,” she said.
Speaking at the event, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the book is a testament to the power of determination, leadership and vision.
Sanwo Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbo Salu-Hundeyin, said the autobiography, Cecilia is the remarkable journey of a woman who has left an indelible mark on the banking industry, philanthropy and the society.
He said Cecilia’s journey is one that inspires as she rose to become a formidable force in Nigeria’s financial sector, breaking barriers and redefining what was possible.
The governor said: “She has remained a symbol of resilience and strength, her story is one that must be told and I commend her for sharing it to the world through the autobiography. “
Also, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, said the books offer invaluable opportunities to journey through the life and experiences of a woman whose name is synonymous with excellence in Nigeria banking industry.
Oborevwori, who was represented by Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Barry Pere Gbe, said: “Cecilia, an autobiography is more than just a personal narrative; it is a testimony of uncommon leadership and impact.
He said her story will no doubt inspire future generations, especially women, to break barriers. “This book serves not only as a record of her legacy, but as a blueprint for leadership, mission and service,” he said.
The book reviewer, Dr. Lasisi Olagunju, described the autobiography as a work of art, and a masterful work in personal revelation.
“The author tells her story in ways that give her away as a woman who remembers every favour and every hurt and tells it all or holds back where necessary.

He said the book is a mirror reflecting history, identity, resilience, and transformation.
In reviewing the second book, Oceanic Odyssey (1990-2010), a memoir, which revolves around the Oceanic Bank saga. He described it as a bittersweet tale of a flourishing institution brought down overnight.
He said the 200 page book, which is devoted solely to Oceanic Bank and its 20-year checkered history, is a breezy, down-to-earth account of policy, economics, and philosophy.
“Mrs. Ibru asserts that Oceanic Odyssey is not just a reflection on her career in banking; it is “a testament to resilience, faith, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity.’ From her early years to her tenure as Managing Director and CEO of Oceanic Bank International Plc, the memoir chronicles milestones, challenges, and lessons learned. It is a story of leadership, vision, and the courage to make difficult decisions in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.
“This memoir is not just about banking or business; it is a tribute to perseverance, innovation, and leadership,” Olagunju noted.
