Balor & Onlyonemassive Agemo, creatively executed sonic output

Disc Jockey is a beauty art. While its historical beginning in Nigeria might be contentious yet it is obvious that it has reached a new height in the last two decades, perhaps, with the advent of Afrobeats movement.

The days of when people see DJ as a hobby seems to have taken the back seat, nowadays, it is for professionals. People are living off it, records are being set and in a way, legacies are being cemented.

Balor and OnlyOnemassive, two Nigerian born Disc Jockeys and music producers have been able to melt their art form to score sonic output. They have continued to show off their distinct art of DJing with their brand of Afro Tech and Afro House in the United Kingdom. Their number of collaborations released so far, which are scattered on streaming websites, has continued to make him one of the forces to reckon with.

Music legends and Disc Jockeys like Black Coffee, Keinemusik, Caiiro, Shimza, Da Capo and others have taken Afro Tech and Afro House Djinh to an inevitable height. For example, Black Coffee won the Best Dance/ Electronic Album category at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

Balor and OnlyOneMassive capped 2024 with the release of their brand new single titled “Agemo.” They are both co-founders of Nomad friendz, an electronic music community established in the Uk. “Agemo,” was co-produced by Doughnaldmusic who had earlier worked with Balor on “Come Back To Me,” and also OnlyOneMassive on some remixes.

The intersection between culture, tradition and cultural practice remains crystal clear, OnlyOneMassive and Balor infuses Nigerian indigenous sound and marinated the sound in an Afro-House way, it sounds geared for global acceptance. Agemo as used in this context refers to a deity, a symbol of message among Ijebu, Yoruba, Nigeria. Agemo masquerade carries messages between gods. In this song, Balor and OnlyOneMassive co-opt vocals from legendary musician, dramatist and poet, Jimi Solanke. His vocals aid the didactic message.

With a few seconds short of seven minutes, Barlo and OnlyOneMassive jointly take the listener on a breezy, fantastic sonic ride on “Agemo,” an Afro-Tech, Afro-House song. The shakers, synth and baseline kick off the song, while it gives off an Amapiano feeling yet it is obvious that the track is a mile away from the South African deep house sub genre.

On this song, Balor and OnlyOneMassive bring their over a decade of experience as DJ to bear, they take the listeners from a reflective time out to somber and thereafter upbeat. It is a cacophony of emotions. One of the beauty of this song is the way Balor and OnlyOneMassive keeps it compact, this is beautifully done in such a way that it is difficult to realize that the song was that long. That’s the power of a fine sound mixture.

OnlyOneMassive co-produced the ear pleasing tune “Feel,” on November 29, 2023. They also worked on “Higher,” (Afrohouse Remix) by BURNA ΒΟΥ and also Davido’s Feel, (Afrotech Remix) Afro House.

Sound makes the world beautiful, Balor & OnlyOneMassive brings the quantum of that to bear on this song. At the end of multiple spins, one is bound to ask for more. Perhaps, in 2025, he will finally release a long project.
