As Nigeria’s cities continue to expand, the lack of green spaces and poor integration of sustainability into urban development have become major concerns among professionals in the built environment. In a timely intervention, architect and researcher Oshineye Gbenga has brought these issues to the fore in a new book titled Contemporary Issues in Modern Architectural Practices in Nigeria.
Gbenga, who co-authored the publication, addresses pressing challenges within Nigeria’s architectural landscape, offering practical solutions that are already gaining attention within academic and professional circles. One of the standout chapters, “Balancing Urban Growth and Green Spaces Planning to Optimise Urban City Life in Nigeria,” proposes a framework for achieving more sustainable and livable cities in the face of rapid urbanisation.
Speaking on the relevance of Gbenga’s contributions, respected architectural critic Arc. Muhammad Abba Kawu described the chapters as “timely and necessary,” adding that “Gbenga’s work is not only academic but grounded in practical realities that confront architects and city planners in Nigeria every day.”
Gbenga emphasises the need to integrate ecological thinking into architectural planning, especially in commercial hubs like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. His chapter urges stakeholders to rethink city expansion by embedding green infrastructure into urban master plans—parks, open spaces, and environmental buffers that contribute to public health and climate resilience.
Another notable section of the book is Chapter Twelve, titled “Incessant Construction Project Failure: Contemporary Issues for Architects’ Considerations in Nigeria.” Here, Gbenga highlights the disturbing frequency of abandoned or failed construction projects across the country. He attributes this trend to poor planning, lack of professional oversight, and misallocation of resources—issues he believes can be corrected through stronger project management structures and regulatory enforcement.
According to Arc. Abba Kawu, “This chapter speaks directly to the heart of one of the most persistent problems in our industry. Gbenga offers clear-headed recommendations that are both implementable and impactful.”
Since its release, Contemporary Issues in Modern Architectural Practices in Nigeria has stirred conversations among students, lecturers, and practitioners in the field. Already, some universities are considering adopting the book as part of their architectural studies curriculum, while professional groups have lauded its relevance to ongoing debates about Nigeria’s urban future.
Gbenga’s work is gaining recognition not only for its substance but also for the solutions it proposes. His insights reflect a deep understanding of the Nigerian context and a commitment to ensuring that architecture plays a central role in solving societal problems.
