I took a break to discover my sound – Grace Idowu

Grace Idowu Ibukunoluwa is the trailblazing Nigerian contemporary gospel musician fusing traditional praise and worship with traditional gospel. The 23-year-old singer and songwriter, who recently released a 7-track LP dubbed ‘More’, after making a triumphant return from a three-year hiatus.

Grace, who hails from Ondo State and was born in Lagos, took a break from the music scene for quite a while.

“I am a graduate of Babcock, and while in school, I was never stopped from recording as I studied music.

So, creating music was needed. I didn’t release in 3 years even after the support I received from emPawa in 2020, was because I was fully booked for shows. Within 2021 and 2022, we were in a recording camp, trying out new sounds, and working on my long-awaited project ‘More’ which is out.”

Grace Idowu highlighted her journey in the last two songs “Bless Me” and “Down”, where she calls out to God, in various periods of her life. The manner she conveyed the song (vocal, writing, delivery, and adlibs) reminds one of the early career of Johnny Drille before the fame. Grace brings back a part of Drille we lost and also did justice to this amazing body of work that left me in search of more.

Overall, Grace Idowu’s ‘More’, delivers a perfect project that awakens the Nigeria Gospel industry. The production richly explores different genres into Afrobeat and Dancehall, into the making of this comprehensive project.
