Igbogbo community, Lagos, came alive recently when her sons and daughters, home and abroad, gathered in the ancient city to celebrate the one-year coronation anniversary of Oba Abdulsemiu Orimadegun Kasali, Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom and its cultural day. The weeklong activities, which would remain indelible in the memory of everyone present, came to a climax with a carnival-like display at the town’s stadium.

The celebration, which attracted notable traditional rulers and chiefs from neigbouring towns to celebrate with the monarch, signposted renewed commitment to cooperation, peace and unity among Igbogbo people.

While speaking at the event, Oba Kasali stated that the occasion was the culmination of 10 days of activities designed to usher in a new dawn in Igbogbo. He stressed that in line with the theme ‘Festival of New Beginning,’ indigenes of the town should look inwards and project themselves and the kingdom to the world, as a global player in economic, political, sporting and other forms of human endeavours.

Oba Kasali commended Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, for his disposition towards the community and the contributions of other stakeholders. He then urged the citizens to be civil and obedient to the laws of the land.

At the event, National Coordinator, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and Aare Ona Kakanfo-designate, Otunba Gani Adams, who was the special guest of honour, told The Guardian that the monarch had done a lot in his one year reign on the throne.
Adams commended Igbogbo people for their laudable contributions to the economy, and hoped the royal father would repackage the community to become a hub of eco-tourism, development, infrastructure and security.

He stressed that apart from culture and traditional religion, the founder day of any community is important because it brings the guiding angels to protect the entire community. Adams also noted that language is also very important as it plays pivotal roles in the people’s lives.

Executive Chairman, Igbogbo Baiyeku, Comrade Olusesan Mayokun Daini, also commended the monarch, describing him as young and peace-loving.
According to him, from time immemorial, Igbogbo’s traditional institutions epitomised integrity, honour and commitment, which have stood the ancient town on the path of enduring prosperity. Daini stated that traditional institutions played significant roles in ensuring that the interests of the citizens came first.

Some of the top dignitaries present at the occasion included Sir Kessington Adebutu, former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, Elejigbo of Langbasa, Oba Hafeez Olakunle Badiru, Hon. Bimpe Adesola, President, Igbogbo Development Association, Sir Kola Ogunkola, Majority Leader, Lagos House of Assembly, Mr. Sanni Agunnbiade, traditional rulers and religious leaders.
