Media Diplomacy: TETFund, VON partner to strengthen academic reputation

Driven by the resolve to leverage international broadcasting as a tool for highlighting the achievements, reforms and investments within Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is partnering the Voice of Nigeria (VON) to amplify education sector’s visibility on the global stage.

Since its establishment in 2011, TETFund has invested heavily in upgrading infrastructure, funding research, sponsoring academic staff training and improving learning facilities across public tertiary institutions. Unfortunately, many of such interventions have not received commensurate global attention.

Pundits observed that by leveraging VON’s extensive reach across Africa, Europe and the Americas, the initiative will assist in showcasing the achievements globally and position Nigeria as an emerging hub for academic excellence, innovation and research-driven growth in Africa.

Since education plays a crucial role in shaping a country’s reputation, attracting foreign partnerships and strengthening academic diplomacy, a structured and sustained media engagement is instrumental to highlighting success stories, policy reforms and institutional breakthroughs that counter negative stereotypes.

With Nigeria making a historic breakthrough in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, with 24 universities making the global list for the first time, the development underscores the country’s steady progress in improving academic standards and enhancing global competitiveness.

Receiving a delegation from VON led by its Director-General, Jibrin Ndace, at the Fund’s headquarters in Abuja, recently, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, said the agency plans to utilise VON’s far-reaching broadcast platform to effectively highlight its projects and impacts on tertiary education beyond Nigeria.

He observed that awareness and appreciation of TETFund’s interventions have increased due to the visible transformation across institutions nationwide, and that deeper media collaboration will further promote transparency and broaden public understanding.

“We believe that telling our story effectively is essential to sustaining public trust and attracting global interest in the higher education sector. VON’s international footprint provides a strategic channel to showcase the scale and impact of our interventions.”

Echono also disclosed that the Fund is rolling out a nationwide commissioning of projects and requires robust media coverage to keep citizens informed, particularly rural communities that depend largely on radio for information.

“As we commission projects across the country, it is important that Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora fully understand how the investments are transforming institutions. We must institutionalise this collaboration through structured content development and continuous engagement.”

While applauding the station’s multilingual broadcasting strength as a key asset for engaging diverse audiences locally and internationally, Echono directed the Fund’s Public Affairs Department to liaise closely with VON to establish a framework for ongoing collaboration.

Earlier, the DG of VON, Ndace, underscored the impact of the Fund’s interventions in infrastructure development, academic research, staff training and overall institutional growth.

He commended Echono’s visionary leadership and far-reaching reforms that have strengthened transparency. He pledged VON’s readiness to deploy its expansive network to showcase TETFund’s achievements to its global audiences.

According to him, the organisation currently transmits in eight languages – English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Fulfulde, French, Arabic and Swahili, which positions it strategically for projecting Nigeria’s developmental strides beyond its borders.

He also disclosed that VON is undergoing institutional repositioning by reinforcing zonal offices to enhance grassroots reporting. In addition, the organisation is expanding its content scope to feature culture, tourism, innovation and human-interest developmental stories alongside official government policies.

Ndace emphasised the urgency for Nigeria to reclaim and manage its own narrative as positive milestones are frequently eclipsed by negative depictions in segments of the foreign media.

He believes that storytelling, backed by credible data and consistent dissemination, is essential to correct misconceptions and promote a more accurate image of the country.

He, therefore, proposed a framework that will enable VON correspondents across the federation to systematically cover TETFund activities and translating reports into multiple languages for broader reach.

Ndace also disclosed ongoing moves to reactivate the organisation’s high-capacity rotating antenna transmitter. Once fully operational, the facility will significantly enhance broadcasting strength and ensure clearer transmission signals world-wide.

He expressed confidence that through coordinated media engagement and strategic international broadcasting, Nigeria’s tertiary education achievements would receive global recognition.

The collaboration, no doubt, signals a deliberate shift towards aligning national development efforts with strategic global communication. Experts believe that promoting TETFund’s tangible investments in infrastructure, research and human capital development, through VON’s multilingual broadcast network, will elevate Nigeria’s academic story across borders. It represents not just a media arrangement, but a forward-looking initiative to position education as a cornerstone of soft power for international engagement.

As both agencies deepen structured alliance, the anticipated outcome is a more informed citizenry, better-connected Diaspora and a global audience with better appreciation of Nigeria’s higher education sector. In amplifying success stories, promoting transparency and fostering international dialogue, the partnership stands to strengthen confidence in the country’s tertiary institutions and open new frontiers for collaboration, research exchange and sustainable development.
