Printmakers Get Association
Widening of professional groups, according to specialised areas, has received a boost as a new entrant Visual Printmakers Association of Nigeria (VPAN) made its formal entry recently. Foundation members include masters as well as younger generation printmaking.
Shortly after VPAN’s meeting, held at master printmaker, Dr Bruce Onobrakpeya’s studio in Papa Ajao, Mushin, Lagos, the young association made its mission known. A statement from the group lists its aims and objectives: “to propagate the art of printmaking in Nigeria; promote the use of both traditional and innovative printmaking techniques; offer information on prints and printmaking for both its members and the Nigerian public as well as the world at large; to hold a bi-annual print exhibition; provide inspiration through discussions by professionals via fertilisation of ideas in materials and methods in printmaking; and encourage understanding among printmakers and strengthen our ideas for socialization and economic prospect. Also included is constant retreat of printmakers at Agbarha-Otor for production and organising conferences, seminars, printmaking discuss and travels in printmaking.
The Lagos gathering came after what the group described as its “inaugural meeting” held in August during the 17th Harmattan Workshop Retreat (2015) at Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, Nigeria.
