SoundboyGreg: From rejection to redemption through music

Greg Eloghosa Clement, known by his stage name SoundboyGreg, grew up in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Raised by his mother in the absence of his father, he found little comfort in the man who took on the role of his stepfather.

When that man eventually cast him out, Greg was left to face the world alone. Rejection became a bitter reality, and for a time, he struggled to find his place. But in the midst of his pain, he found something that would change his life and music.

At first, music was simply an escape, a safe haven from the harshness of his reality. It was where he could pour out his emotions, where he could heal without fear of judgment. But over time, it became something greater, a passion he could not ignore. It consumed him, shaped him, and ultimately became the driving force behind his dreams.

In 2023, SoundboyGreg took his first major step toward a music career, thanks to the support of his friend and producer, 808ng. Together, they created an EP that fused Afro dancehall, Afro fusion, and hip-hop.

The project was a significant milestone, with 808ng featuring on most of the tracks, except for Bend It, which Greg performed alone. The success of the EP gave him the confidence to explore new sounds, and by 2024, he decided to experiment with trap music. This shift led to the release of My Grind in December, a song that introduced a new dimension to his artistry.

Despite his evolving musical style, Greg’s Edo heritage remains at the heart of his sound. The rich traditions of storytelling, rhythm, and deep expression from his culture are woven into his music. Even as he ventures into genres like trap and Afro fusion, his roots are evident in the melodies he crafts, the lyrics he pens, and the energy he brings to every track. His upbringing in Benin City instilled in him a strong work ethic, and that same hustle mentality is reflected in his music.

Through his songs, SoundboyGreg hopes to inspire others. His music carries messages of hope, self-love, and perseverance, lessons he had to learn the hard way. He wants his listeners to understand that no matter how difficult life gets, they are enough, and better days are ahead.

One of the biggest challenges Greg has faced is balancing his music career with his responsibilities as the breadwinner of his family. The pressure to provide often pulled him away from his dreams, making it difficult to commit fully to his passion. Yet, he refused to let go of music, knowing that it was an essential part of who he was.

Now, as he prepares to release his next single, Trash or Treasure, an Afro fusion track about self-worth, he envisions a future where he can dedicate himself entirely to his craft. With dreams of collaborating with artists like Don Jazzy, Jesse Jagz, Wizkid, and Wande Coal, SoundboyGreg is ready to turn his struggles into a legacy of success.
