Security forces have rescued seven students following an armed attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, where suspected gunmen stormed the premises during ongoing NECO examinations.
The operation, led by security agencies in the area, is still underway as authorities continue efforts to locate and rescue students abducted during the attack. Officials say the exact number of missing candidates has yet to be confirmed as search teams comb surrounding communities and suspected escape routes.
The attack, which disrupted the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO), reportedly threw the school and surrounding community into panic as gunmen invaded the premises in the early hours of the day.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers arrived in large numbers, forcing students and staff to flee in different directions. While some students were successfully rescued during the initial response by security operatives, several others remain unaccounted for.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of schools in parts of Borno State, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted educational institutions despite ongoing military operations in the North-East region.
Security authorities have assured that all necessary measures are being deployed to secure the release of the abducted students and prevent further attacks on schools in the area.
Parents and residents have continued to gather anxiously near the school and surrounding communities as they await updates on the fate of the missing students.
