Akwa Ibom receives first batch of CNG buses to modernise public transport

FG unveils financing scheme for CNG vehicle conversion

Akwa Ibom State has taken delivery of the first batch of 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as part of a broader initiative to modernise its public transportation system and improve mobility across the state.

Governor Umo Eno received the buses at the Government House in Uyo, describing the delivery as a significant milestone in the state’s transport reform programme. The buses are the first tranche of 50 CNG-powered vehicles ordered by the administration to provide safer, more efficient and affordable transportation services across Akwa Ibom’s 31 local government areas.

The governor said the project forms part of his administration’s wider infrastructure development agenda and is aimed at creating a more reliable public transport network while leveraging the state’s improved road infrastructure.

Eno noted that the next phase of the programme would include the completion of bus terminals, installation of vehicle tracking systems and deployment of a modern electronic ticketing platform to enhance operational efficiency, accountability and service delivery.

He commended the Ministry of Transport, the contractor, the military and other stakeholders for ensuring the successful delivery of the buses.

According to the governor, the initiative marks the beginning of a new phase in the administration’s infrastructure drive, with projects now moving from planning to visible execution.

He urged residents to remain confident in the government’s development agenda, stressing that sustainable infrastructure delivery requires careful planning, patience and consistent implementation.

Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, said the arrival of the CNG buses demonstrates the governor’s commitment to repositioning the state’s transport sector and improving residents’ quality of life.

“The arrival of the CNG buses is a testament to Governor Umo Eno’s deliberate commitment to making life better for the people through a modern and efficient transportation system,” Luke said.

The investment aligns with Nigeria’s growing adoption of CNG-powered vehicles as governments and businesses seek lower-cost and cleaner alternatives to petrol and diesel-powered transport.
