Murtala Muhammed International Airport records leaps in human, aircraft traffic

THE completion of the re-modeled new terminals of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) will significantly led to an optimal growth in the bulk of passengers, cargoes and aircrafts movement at the airport.

A source at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) who disclosed to The Guardian further said there has been a huge increase in movement of passengers at the airport since the past few years.

According to the source MMIA, reputed to be the busiest in West Africa and a major hub in the region recorded a total of 7,558,551 passengers in the year 2014. A significant increase compared to a total of 6,946,473 passengers in 2013.

The Guardian further gathered that in 2013,aircraft movement at the airport was 97,554 which was 12.3% less than the total of 109,628 in 2014. Cargo movement at the airport also increased by 2.93% with a figure of 191,037,551.61, compared with 196,794,444 movements in 2013.

While passenger traffic is projected to increase at an annual rate of about 15%, analysts believe that the remodeled airports would help to achieve this, as the completion of the new international terminals would lead to significant growth in passenger, aircraft and cargo movements. The proposed national carrier would also help in actualizing this target.

Meanwhile, Kabiru Mohammed a staff of the FAAN has been selected as a candidate of the board of directors of the Community of Practice (CoP) of the Airport Council International. This was stated by the Nominating Committee of the International Airport Professional , Community of Practice (IAPCoP) in a letter from its office in Montrea, Canada.
