North-east scores highest as airfares surge by 6.96%

With the rise in aviation fuel, the average fares paid by local air travellers for specified single journey routes increased by 6.96 per cent on a month-on-month basis.

Records by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Transport Fare Watch for August 2022 showed a rise from N60, 811 in July to N65, 041 in August 2022.

The North-east region recorded the highest airfare with 80.9 per cent from N60, 883.33 in July to N66, 950.00 in august 2022.

The South-South recorded second in the highest fare of 76.42 per cent from N59,754 in July to N67, 366 in August 2022.
The South-East came third with a 75 per cent increase from N59,911 in July to N65,520.00 in August 2022.

On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 76.72 per cent from N36,805 in August 2021. Also, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop, decreased by 0.05 per cent on a month-on-month basis from N602.77 in July 2022 to N602.48 in August 2022.

On a year-on-year basis, however, the average fare paid rose by 39.92 per cent from N430.58 in August 2021. In another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop rose to N3,779.96 in August 2022, indicating an increase of 0.57 per cent on a month-on-month basis compared to N3,758.46 reported in July 2022.

On a year -on-year basis, the fare rose by 46.02 per cent from N2,588.69 in August 2021.

Also, the average fare paid for water transport (waterway passenger transportation) in August 2022 increased to N974.26, showing a growth of 0.87 per cent on a month-on-month basis from N965.82 recorded in July 2022. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 14.84 per cent from N848.36 in August 2021.
