FROM January to November, Nigeria’s Domain Name System (DNS) industry has recorded the registration and renewal of 33, 572 .ng domain names.

This statistic was contained in the country’s latest domain report released by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), at the weekend.
The growth showed that Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), which is Nigeria’s identifier on the web is gradually gaining global traction.

According to the report, the domain name registration in November 2015 was higher compared to the registrations in the past three months of this year as the renewal rate hovered around the same figure as the previous month.
Specifically, from January to November 2015, 20,324 new domain names were registered, 13,248 domain names were renewed and so in total, 33,572 domain names were registered and renewed.

The report also noted that since January 2015, full accreditation as a NiRA Accredited Registrar had been granted to four applicants and another applicant undergoing training in December, 2015.

NiRA’s President, Sunday Afolayan, said: “We are hopeful that with full accreditation of more Registrars, this would provide more opportunities for creating awareness of the .ng brand.”
According to him increased adoption of .ng domain names by individuals, businesses and government agencies would help the country to reduce the capital flight being recorded with the preponderant use of foreign domain names such as .com, .net, .za, .ua, among others.

A further analysis of the report showed that in January, there were 1,542 registered domain names, 1,070 renewed and 41 transferred. In February, NiRA recorded 1,512 registered, 1,048 renewed and 45 transferred domain names. In March, the figures increased to 1,805 registered, 1, 429 renewed and 67 transferred .ng domain names while of in April, registration declined to 1,509; renewal to 1, 371 and transfer stood at 63.

Also in May, the number of registered domain names was 1,511 while renewed and transferred domains declined sharply to 1,237 and 32 respectively.

The trend got a fillip as registrations increased to 2,087; renewal reached 1,268 with 54 transfers in June. The month of July came with additional vigour, as registered domain names hit 2,260; renewed domain names stood at 1,282 with 33 transfers.

In August, domain name registration stood at 1, 990, renewal stood at 1,178 with 40 transfer domain names. However, the month of September witnessed a decline in the number of domain names registration, as only 1, 975 domain names were registered with 1,380 renewals with 33 transferred domain names.

In October, 2,101 were registered, 1,349 renewed while 73 were transferred. In November, which is the latest month, 2,032 were registered, 1,117 renewed and 46 were transferred.

Afolayan explained that NiRA continues to engage in activities targeted at increasing awareness among the public and mpowering the registrars in term of technical know-how of .ng domain system.

He noted that the Quarterly NiRA Accredited Registrars’ Forum held recently with many registrars attending either physically at the NiRA Office Complex or participating online.
“We discussed the successes recorded by .ng in 2015, based on the identified strategic drivers that are pivotal to our success. We discussed the technological innovations, business strategies and operational excellence that are NiRA’s priorities.
“We also outlined the 2016 strategies, including our plan to embark on an extensive online campaign to advocate and promote the adoption of .ng,” he said.

According to him, “it was an engaging experience, with those in attendance making very useful contributions. We plan to harmonise all these ideas for the growth of the .ng brand and the DNS Industry in Nigeria. We were all reminded that .ng is the Nigerian online identity and we must all work hard to positively project it.”
