Blames revenue shortfall on insecurity, fiscal policies

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Oyo/Osun area command has disclosed that it generated N7.24 billion as its total revenue for the first half of this year.

Addressing reporters on its activities in the last six months, the Area Controller, Temitope Ogunkua said the command has a shortfall of N345.8 million compared to last year where it generated N7.59 billion.

He said: “Some of the factors which might have led to this shortfall in the revenue generation in 2016 include, government fiscal policies as the high exchange rate, ban on importation of rice through border areas, general economic down turn which led to low sales on the part of major excise factories within the command and general insecurity in the country.

The customs boss while giving a breakdown of the anti-smuggling activities of the command said a total of 948 vehicles paid duty to the tune of N156.2 million within the period under review.

Ogunkua also informed that a total of 119 seizures with the duty paid N240.3 million was also made from January to June this year.

He said: “The command looks forward to unprecedented performance in the second half of the year, re-strategisation, various diversification in intelligence gathering and utilization, application of diplomacy in anti-smuggling especially in volatile border areas would enable the command to consistently build on both revenue and anti-smuggling feats”.
