Very good article and it is exactly what the government needs to do to improve power in the country. with a focused plan like this, we can drastically improve and increase our electricity within a short period. However we lack the creative leaders that would be able to make this change. The first action by the minister was to impose high traffic on consumers, instead of insisting that discos meter their consumers. The government continue to play lip service to gas supply and exploration, while NERC continue to come up with ways to increase the pain or loot Nigerian’s.
The first thing the government needs to do is to mandate disco to meter the who nation. only then would they be able to charge the new rate. secondly, government need to prioritize the supply of gas to the power sector before export. They need to mandate that all generating plant have storage tanks on site, to allow them to store gas supply for 3 months. The government needs to also secure our gas supply across the nation. Next NERC needs to open up the market of electricity generation, transmission and distribution. electricity should be transmitted and distributed where it is generated, this would allow for IPP to generate and sell all the electricity it produces and not waste it transmitting it to the national grid. any excess can then be sold to the national grid. This should also be allow for any company or industry that generates more electricity than it uses. NERC also need to allow various means of electricity generation and for it to be sold in its immediate surrounding. The solutions to our problem are numerous, we just fail in leadership.
