Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), operator of Nigeria’s first commercial gold mine, has been recognised for the second consecutive year by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), receiving the HR Oscar Award for Best Practices in the Mining Sector at the institute’s 57th International Conference and Exhibition in Abuja.
The award, presented by CIPM, Nigeria’s regulatory body for human resource management, acknowledges organisations that demonstrate excellence in people management, employee welfare, and inclusive workforce strategies. SROL’s repeat recognition underscores its consistent commitment to developing strong human resource frameworks and aligning its practices with both national and international standards.
Speaking on the achievement, SROL’s Human Resources Manager, Oluwaseun Fagesi, said the award was a reflection of the company’s shared commitment to excellence. “This award from the CIPM is an indication that our HR standards are not just strong, but are truly benchmarked against national and international excellence. It reflects the collective effort of every member of the SROL team and our ongoing commitment to embedding world-class HR practices across our operations. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain focused on driving not just mining excellence, but human and community excellence as well,” he said.
SROL’s HR strategy places emphasis on workforce development, diversity, and skills enhancement. The company reports that 99 per cent of its workforce at the Segilola Gold Mine are Nigerians, with 37 per cent drawn from its host communities. These figures, it said, demonstrate its commitment to local employment, skills transfer, and inclusive participation in the mining value chain.
The company also continues to advance gender inclusion and local empowerment initiatives within its host communities. Its programmes have supported women in technical roles and funded infrastructure projects designed to promote education, access, and sustainable livelihoods.
SROL stated that its long-term strategy remains focused on strengthening its human resource capacity while meeting its obligations under Community Development Agreements. By prioritising training, inclusion, and transparent community engagement, it seeks to align business growth with shared prosperity.
As it looks ahead, the company said it plans to deepen its investment in people and innovation to further strengthen HR standards across the mining sector. It added that sustaining these practices would help set new benchmarks for responsible and inclusive growth within Nigeria’s evolving extractive industry.
Expands Community Development Projects in Osun
Meanwhile, SROL has intensified its community development efforts in Osun State through the 2025 edition of its Segilola Women Initiative Programme (SWIP) and Scholarship Scheme.
The programmes, held on 17 October at the Iperindo Community New Town Hall, benefitted 90 residents from the host communities of Iperindo, Odo-Ijesha and Imogbara. Sixty students received scholarships, while 30 women entrepreneurs were supported with business equipment including freezers, sewing machines, digesters, grinders and gas burners.
SROL stated that the initiatives aim to promote economic inclusion and long-term development. “At Segilola Resources, we believe that genuine and lasting impact begins with people — by empowering them through education, enterprise, and opportunity,” said Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, Community Development and Stakeholder Manager.
The scholarship scheme recognised 35 secondary school students and 25 undergraduates for academic excellence. In addition to financial support, top-performing students received laptops, school bags and plaques.
