LASPEC urges workers to begin retirement plan early, maintain pension records

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) has urged public servants in the state to embrace early retirement plan aside from maintaining accurate pension records throughout their careers. It warned that poor documentation remains one of the major causes of delays in the processing and payment of retirement benefits under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The commission said while regular pension contributions are critical to securing financial stability after retirement, public servants must also ensure that their personal and employment records are up-to-date with their Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) to facilitate seamless access to retirement benefits.

Speaking at a sensitisationprogramme on the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for public servants in active service, the Director-General of LASPEC,Babalola Obilana, stressed that retirement planning should be a continuous process rather than an exercise undertaken only a few months before exiting the public service.

According to him, the CPS was established to provide public servants with financial security after retirement through a sustainable, transparent and professionally managed pension system.

He noted that achieving this objective requires workers to take proactive steps throughout their years of service by ensuring that their records are complete, accurate and regularly updated.

Obilana explained that the sensitisationprogramme was designed to equip public servants with practical knowledge on the documentation, statutory requirements and administrative procedures necessary for the smooth processing of retirement benefits.

He said participants would also gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in the pension value chain, including the Lagos State Pension Commission and Pension Fund Administrators.

According to him, the programme would address common errors and omissions that frequently delay retirement benefit processing while providing practical guidance on how workers can avoid such challenges.

Obilana reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the welfare of public servants, saying the commission would continue to implement initiatives aimed at strengthening compliance with the CPS, improving pension administration and ensuring prompt payment of retirement benefits.

He also urged participants to share the knowledge gained with colleagues in their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), describing awareness as a critical tool for improving compliance and retirement preparedness.
