The Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central African Region (Abuja MoU) has granted the Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron (AMANO), the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron and Regional Maritime University, Ghana, observer status.

The observer status enables the institutions to participate and contribute to the efforts of the Abuja MOU in eradicating substandard ships within the West and Central African states.

The Publicity Secretary, AMANO, Oamien Ailemen, who disclosed this in a statement, expressed delight that the alumni were granted observer status by the council of ministers following a recommendation by the Port State committee meeting held between September 10 and 13, 2024 in Congo Brazzaville. He said the approval came following an application put forward by AMANO before the committee, which was deliberated and approved.

“With its mission to contribute towards excellence in the maritime sector through capacity development within the maritime sector, this status will bring AMANO into the mainstream of developing and promoting capacity and aligning programs towards common goals,” he said.

Also speaking, the President of the AMANO, Emmanuel Maiguwa, who was in attendance expressed satisfaction with the new development even as he commended the progress and programmes embarked on by the Abuja MOU.

Maiguwa said the Abuja MOU leadership has developed the capacity of member states and the ethics of Port State inspectors.  He equally assured that AMANO will work assiduously to support the mission and programmes of the organisation.
