Nigeria and China, the Grimaldi Group

In a move set to revolutionize maritime trade between Nigeria and China, the Grimaldi Group has launched the first-ever direct shipping service from Shanghai to Lagos.

This initiative aims to address long-standing challenges faced by Nigerian importers, including delays caused by transshipment and high logistics costs.

Announcing the development in Lagos, Managing Director of Grimaldi Agency Nigeria and PTML Terminal, Mr. Ascanio Russo, noted the transformative potential of the service.

“This is the fastest transit time in the industry—no transshipment, no delays! Nigerian importers can now ship their goods with ease and confidence, knowing their cargo will arrive directly and on time,” he said.

The service will transport diverse cargo, including containers, vehicles, heavy equipment, and project cargo.
The direct route reduces the journey to 27 days, significantly faster than traditional routes, making it a game-changer for businesses reliant on timely deliveries.

The initiative is expected to ease the financial burden on Nigerian businesses by cutting costs associated with delays and multiple handling points.

Russo noted, “With this direct shipping service, we are addressing one of the key challenges faced by Nigerian importers—unnecessary delays caused by transshipments through other ports. This direct route reduces costs, eliminates risks, and simplifies logistics for businesses in Nigeria.”

Importers and exporters have praised the move, recognizing its potential to improve the ease of doing business and foster stronger economic ties between Nigeria and China.

“This is a significant milestone for Nigerian trade. It will not only save time but also reduce overall shipping costs, which is crucial for small and medium enterprises.”

The service will operate through Grimaldi’s PTML Terminal at Tin Can Island Port, a facility renowned for its efficient operations. Russo emphasized the terminal’s strategic importance, stating, “We are offering streamlined handling, priority processing, and an unparalleled level of service. PTML Terminal remains the preferred logistics hub in West Africa.”

The maiden voyage of the Great Cotonou, a state-of-the-art G5-class ro-ro multipurpose vessel, marked the launch of the monthly service.
The vessel is equipped with advanced technology to improve cargo handling efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

“This new service is a testament to Grimaldi’s dedication to innovation, customer satisfaction, and the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector,” Russo said.

The direct shipping will bolster trade between Nigeria and China, two nations with a burgeoning trade relationship.
With competitive freight rates and efficient logistics, the service is expected to create new opportunities for Nigerian businesses and strengthen Nigeria’s role in global supply chains.

“We are proud to be a trusted partner for Nigerian businesses and remain steadfast in our mission to provide world-class shipping solutions. This service will redefine maritime trade standards and drive economic growth in both regions,” Russo said.
