Polysmart invests $60m in Nigeria’s largest plastic recycling plant

POLYSMART

Polysmart Packaging Limited, one of the pioneers of food grade rPET recycling in Nigeria, focused on transforming post-consumer plastic waste into high-quality recycled materials and sustainable packaging solutions, today announced a landmark $60 million dollar expansion plan to construct the largest state-of-the-art plastic recycling facility in Nigeria with its first phase due to be commissioned at the end of March 2026 and the final phase in July 2026.

This unprecedented investment underscores the company’s commitment to driving circular economy, creating massive employment opportunities, enabling brands reduce their carbon footprint, meet global sustainability standards and mitigating the environmental crisis caused by plastic pollution.

The new facility will feature world-class technologies like Sorema Plastic Recycling System, Tomra Sorting Solution and two (2) units of EremaVacunite 2621T V-LeaN SSP to process multiple polymer streams, with a focus on producing high-quality, food-grade rPET (recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) resin and flakes which conform with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agency regulations, as well as non-food grade HDPE, LDPE, and PP materials.

“This is a transformative moment for Nigeria’s green economy,” said Wasiu Abolaji Balogun, the MD/CEO of Polysmart Packaging Limited. “The $60 million dollar investment is not just in machinery and infrastructure;it’s an investment in the human capital of Nigeria. We anticipate generating thousands of new direct and indirect jobs across the waste collection, sorting, technicaland operational segments of the value chain, providing dignified and sustainable livelihoods for our people.”

With a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, innovation, and operational excellence, Polysmart plays a pivotal role in reducing plastic pollution while supporting the manufacturing, FMCG, and packaging industries with reliable, locally sourced raw materials. The Company continues to expand its capacity, strengthen its waste recovery network, and invest in state-of-the-art technology to meet rising domestic and regional demand for recycled materials.

Key Highlights of the Expansion:
Largest Regional Capacity: The plant will be the biggest of its kind with an input capacity of 100,000 tons of mixed plastics, significantly increasing the region’s overall recycling capacity and diverting vast amounts of plastic waste from landfills and waterways.

Import Substitution: By producing certified food-grade rPET locally, Polysmart Packaging Limited will provide a crucial raw material for the local food and beverage industry, helping to reduce reliance on foreign exchange for virgin plastic imports.

Driving a Circular Economy: The facility ensures that post-consumer plastic wasterPET, HDPE, and PPis re-introduced into the manufacturing cycle, maximizing resource efficiency and setting a new standard for industrial sustainability in Nigeria.

Waste-to-Value Transformation at National Scale: The expanded facilities will enable the recovery and recycling of over 5.5 billion PET bottles annually, diverting significant volumes of plastic from landfills, drainage systems, and oceans.

Significant Reduction in Virgin Plastic Demand: The expansion will substantially cut Nigeria’s dependence on virgin plastics produced from crude oil, replacing them with high-quality recycled alternatives and supporting a more sustainable, circular manufacturing ecosystem.

Strengthened ESG Compliance & Lower Carbon Footprint: By scaling food-grade and non-food-grade recycling capacity, Polysmart will be delivering carbonsavings of up to 170,000 tons as per the new plant capacity, conserve energy, and align with global ESG and circular-economy standards adopted by leading multinationals.

The company is working closely with federal and state environmental agencies to ensure the project meets the highest global standards for safety and environmental protection. This initiative is expected to solidify Nigeria’s position as a regional hub for sustainable manufacturing and green technology. Polysmart remains committed to leading Nigeria & West Africa in sustainable plastics transformation.
