ABOUT 13 years after its creation, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu's Aninri Local Council of Enugu State went agog on Wednesday as its first electricity project was commissioned. It was indeed a delight to watch as children, young boys and girls, men, women and elderly leapt in frenzy and joyous celebrations as Ekweremadu, who facilitated the project, turned the hobs to switch on the lights, thus ending the nightmarish of the council. The N490 million project awarded by the Federal Government under the Rural Electrification Scheme was almost abandoned following the scrapping of the agency but for Ekweremadu, who hails from the council, that gave the contractor necessary encouragement which ensured the completion of the project.

IT was another moment of celebration for Fan Milk Plc when the Managing Director of the dairy firm, Mr. Jens Erik Mollenbach, bagged an Achievers Distinguished Award at the Achievers Magazine's Merit Award ceremony held at the Premier Hotel, Ibadan recently, to honour deserving individuals for brilliant performances in their various fields of endeavour. The scarcity of petroleum products continued to hit Borno and Yobe states, as motorists and commercial motorcycle operators besieged a handful of the filling stations that had fuel yesterday to dispense. The filling stations in Maiduguri and Damaturu were jam-packed with very long queues of vehicles and motorcycles, stretching up of two-three kilometres on Airport, Baga and Sir Kashim Ibrahim Way and roads.

THE Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), has called on the National Assembly to legislate stiff penalties for importers of substandard products. The Director General of SON, Dr John Akanya, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja recently. Akanya blamed traders and marketers for going out to demand for low quality products to make more gains at the expense of the economy and the lives of the people.

CRUDE oil prices traded little changed after a government report yesterday showed a larger-than-expected decline in U.S. stockpiles, signaling a recovery in fuel demand in the world's largest energy consumer. U.S. crude inventories fell for a third straight week, dropping to the lowest level since January, according to Wednesday's report. "The inventory report was a key catalyst for the market," said Paul Harris, head of natural resources risk management at the Bank of Ireland in Dublin. "That moved the market sharply."
