THE Nigeria Shippers’ Council (NSC) has announced plans to strengthen foreign exchange conditions for commercial banks and their customers in the maritime sector. Under the arrangement, unveiled by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in collaboration with NSC, all transactions associated with import and export and sourcing of foreign exchange must secure the approval of NSC.

THE Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Habib Abdullahi has called for the urgent convocation of a national conference on the delineation of functions amongst agencies of government, responsible for maritime safety and security. According to Abdullahi, the conference, which he said was long overdue, should be tripartite in nature with the active participation of the Marine Police, the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration & Safety Agency (NIMASA).

According to the cabotage law, foreign vessels are not allowed to partake in any domestic coastal trade as obtainable in other developed countries of the world, while it will at the same time promote the development of indigenous tonnage and to establish a Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) and for related matters.

TERMINAL operators have listed the incessant removal of management of government agencies in the nation’s maritime industry as one of the constraints they have been facing since they took over the port in 2006, saying such removals have been based on political patronage rather than professionalism. They said the attitude of the government was affecting policy implementation, as it does not encourage continuity and international best practice.

AS part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in collaboration with the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Organization (ALCO) have commenced a sensitization campaign for stakeholders in the Nigerian transport and maritime sector on how to prevent HIV/ AIDS. Tagged: “Getting To Zero” was flagged-off at the Tin Can Island Port with truck drivers, terminal operators, among others in attendance. During the event, free HIV check was conducted and free condoms distributed.

THE National Automotive Council (NAC) is to strengthen its partnership with Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and others government agencies in the development of a portal for all vehicles imported into the country. Speaking during a visit to the Executive Secretary of NSC in Lagos, Director General of NAC, Aminu Jalal, said the proposed vehicle portal is expected to play key role in the registration of vehicles in the country through the use of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
