For about 20 years, Mr. Ladipo Laniyan has been with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). As the new director of the NYSC in Lagos State, he has developed friendship with the youths and devised ways of improving their lot so as to ensure that the goals of the scheme are achieved.

The prevailing hard times seemed to have plunged Nigerians into the new culture of buying second hand goods - second hand cars, second hand refrigerators, second hand generators, second hand radios and ,even second, hand clothes. Life must go on. Nigerians indeed have become "managers" wily-nilly, making the best of the dire circumstances they found themselves. What else could one do?

New York, December 17, 2009-2009 has been the bloodiest year for media professionals killed in the line of duty worldwide since 1992, and has seen the highest death toll for journalists in Sub-Saharan Africa in this decade, according to an annual analysis of media fatalities worldwide released today by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). In a week marking the anniversaries of the unsolved murders of journalists Norbert Zongo of Burkina Faso and Gambian Deyda Hydara, the report denotes that none of the perpetrators of the 2009 journalist murder cases have been brought to justice.
