FOR some golf fans, February 19 effectively marked the start of the season. It was not because Phil Mickelson finally got his game on track with a 63 at Riviera, rather it was the day Tiger Woods posted a statement on his Web site that filled golf with optimism it had been missing for eight months. Announcing his return from knee surgery, Woods said: "I'm now ready to play again." What followed were plenty of memories in 2009. The fairy tale that turned into a heartbreaker at Turnberry when 59-year-old Tom Watson failed to make par from the middle of the 18th fairway and lost the British Open in a play-off, Henrik Stenson making more news for stripping down to his skivvies than for winning The Players Championship and Michelle Wie winning more tourneys than Vijay Singh.

ONLY in its second edition, the Mary Slesssor Charity Golf Tournament has met the objectives it was set up to, so says the originator of the tourney and wife of the Cross River State Governor, Mrs. Obioma Liyel Imoke. Concerned by the plight of abandoned children and pregnant teens that lack medical and emotional attention, Imoke incorporated a charity golf tourney into the yearly Calabar Carnival. The event was also to enhance tourism as well as attract more children and women into the game of golf as a healthy and rewarding sport that can be used as an empowerment tool.
