The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan (UI), Kayode Adebowale, on Tuesday, disclosed that 448 of the 5,900 graduating students of the 2024/2025 academic session obtained First Class degrees across various fields.
Adebowale disclosed this on the first day of the convocation ceremony, which was held for Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, on Tuesday in Ibadan.
The Vice Chancellor congratulated the graduands, describing their success as a reflection of discipline, hard work and perseverance.
Adebowale said the university had prepared them to face global challenges with competence, character and creativity.
According to him, the institution remains Nigeria’s premier and among Africa’s most prestigious universities.
“The University of Ibadan has trained you to seize future opportunities with confidence and integrity”, he said.
Adebowale stated that UI’s Postgraduate College, the largest in Africa, continues to produce high-level manpower for national and global development, while the newly established Faculty of Computing positions the institution at the forefront of digital innovation.
Adebowale said the spirit of innovation continues to drive UI’s progress and sustain its leading role in higher education.
In his keynote address, a United Kingdom (UK)-based Medical Practitioner and alumnus, Abel Adegoke, urged the graduates to embrace resilience, service and integrity, saying challenges should be seen as stepping stones to personal and professional growth.
Adegoke said: “True growth does not come from comfort. Go into the world not as job seekers but as solution creators. The world awaits the light of your brilliance”.
In other news, the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTAFederal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has announced that the institution is set to convocate 2,747 students during its 36th convocation ceremony, with 240 of them earning first-class honours degrees.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, disclosed this during the convocation press briefing held on Friday at the campus. Oladiji said the figures reflect the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, research-driven teaching, and innovation.
Providing a breakdown of the figure, she disclosed that 1,479 students graduate with second class upper, while 912 and 116 students graduate with second class lower and third class, respectively.
She also revealed that apart from the 2,747 undergraduate students who will be awarded bachelor’s degrees, 867 will be awarded postgraduate degrees, with a breakdown of 627 for MTECH, 86 for PGD and 154 for PhD.
Oladiji stated that the awards for first degrees will be presented to students next week Friday, while the postgraduate awards will be given on Saturday. She noted that the valedictory speech will be delivered by Akindunbi Aduragbemi Isaac, from the Department of Civil Engineering, who was the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98/5.0.
