Ewutuntun alumni inaugurate new building, classrooms

The Ewutuntun Grammar School Old Students’ Association has demonstrated its commitment to educational development by unveiling a new administrative building, principal’s office, and four classrooms equipped with modern furniture for its senior secondary school students.

The project, initiated as part of the association’s 40th anniversary, aimed to enhance the school’s infrastructure and learning environment.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Abisola Adegbite, commended the old students for their contributions to education in the state.

She applauded the synergy between the government and alumni associations in improving school facilities.

Adegbite urged students to make good use of the new facilities, while encouraging teachers to redouble their efforts in upholding their dedication to academic excellence.

She said the ministry remains committed to providing necessary support to schools across the state, emphasising that education is not only about infrastructure, but also about shaping responsible citizens.

“The decision to be who and what you are lies in your hands. Do better with yourself so you can do better for society. The future of Lagos depends on young people who value learning and discipline.

President of the Old Students’ Association, Adekunle Jaiyesimi, expressed pride in the legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, describing him as a visionary leader whose policies opened doors to thousands

He explained that the alumni decided to embark on the building projects after discovering the poor state of the principal’s office during a visit last year.

Already, he disclosed that the association has raised about N65 million for the construction and furnishing of new facilities.

Jaiyesimi further added that the association plans to provide laptops, desktops, and modern printers to enhance digital learning within the school.

He added that the alumni have a tradition of recognising outstanding students, teachers, and non-teaching staff for their dedication.

“This project is not just about buildings; it is about giving back to the school that shaped us,” he said.

In his goodwill message, Wasiu Balogun, another alumnus, commended the late Jakande’s vision of free education, describing it as a foundation that produced skilled and successful Nigerians.

He reflected on their time in the school and urged the current students to learn from their teachers’ dedication, discipline, and hard work.

“Life is full of struggles, but true success lies in giving back and upholding the good name of your alma mater.”

The Principal, Nureni Alade, expressed gratitude to the alumni for their continued generosity. He acknowledged the donation of computers, a photocopier machine, and other learning materials, assuring that the facilities will be properly maintained.

On his part, the Elewu of Ewu Land, Oba Shakirudeen Kuti, urged students to protect the newly provided facilities, describing them as a legacy of sacrifice and love from the alumni.

“It costs a lot of money. Please don’t damage it. Those who provided these things passed through this school and want you to have better opportunities,” he said.

The monarch thanked the government officials and called for the establishment of a well-equipped science laboratory to further support the school’s academic growth.
