Achievers University, Owo recorded significant academic, administrative and infrastructural milestones during the eight-month tenure of its Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amos Oyesoji Aremu, culminating in the full accreditation of its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme with an approved admission quota of 120 students.

This was contained in the executive summary of Aremu’s handover report, released ahead of the expiration of his appointment on July 31, 2026.

Aremu, who served as Acting Vice-Chancellor from December 1, 2025, following the temporary exit of the substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Omolola Oladunni Irinoye, said the university remained academically and administratively stable despite challenges, including the discovery of a fraud case in April 2026, traced to the 2023/2024 academic session.

According to him, the institution successfully completed the 2025/2026 academic session while implementing key governance reforms aimed at strengthening its internal administration.

Among the major policy decisions were the Senate’s approval of a Policy on Name Rendering and Seating Arrangements, the rescheduling of the university’s Convocation Day to October 24 to align with the Federal Government’s approval date for the institution’s establishment, and the inauguration of several committees, including the Joint Achievers University/Federal Medical Centre Implementation Committee.

On academic development, Aremu disclosed that the university revived its inaugural lecture series, with three inaugural lectures delivered during the period after the last one held in 2022. New academic gowns were also procured to support inaugural and public lectures across faculties.

He described the full accreditation of the MBBS programme as a landmark achievement that would enhance the capacity of the College of Medicine to contribute to medical education in Nigeria.

In addition to the MBBS programme, the university secured full accreditation for Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sociology, Criminology and Security Studies, Microbiology, and Medical Laboratory Science.

The report also highlighted efforts to strengthen postgraduate studies, particularly quality assurance mechanisms for doctoral programmes, while steps were taken to establish Distance Education and e-learning platforms, with course materials for the Bachelor of Nursing programme already developed.

Aremu also noted that the university intensified efforts to improve its global research visibility through registration with the Times Higher Education world university ranking system.

On staff welfare and institutional development, he said new promotion guidelines and standardised curriculum vitae formats for academic and non-teaching staff were introduced and applied during the 2025/2026 promotion exercise.

The exercise resulted in the promotion of two academics to the rank of Reader, while five other readership cases were declared prima facie qualified alongside promotions for several academic and non-academic staff.

According to the report, infrastructure development also received attention through improvements in ICT facilities, security architecture and environmental sustainability.

The university planted 30 tree seedlings at the Faculty of Technology and Engineering under its campus greening initiative, in addition to another 108 seedlings planted across the campus.

Student development was equally enhanced through activities of the Red Cross Society and the Nigerian Cadet Network.

Aremu attributed the achievements recorded during his tenure to the support of the Pro-Chancellor, Governing Council, Senate, management, staff and students, expressing confidence that he was handing over a stable, functional and forward-looking institution.
