The Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN) has been ranked as the number one university in the Niger Republic by the AD Scientific Index, emerging ahead of all public and private institutions in the country.

The recognition is contained in the latest 2026 AD Scientific Index ranking, published under the title “Niger: 8 All Universities Rankings 2026.” According to the ranking, MAAUN placed first, followed by Université Dan Dicko Dankoulodo de Maradi in second position, and Université André Salifou de Zinder in third.

Other institutions listed in the ranking include Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey, Université Boubacar Ba de Tillabéri, Université de Diffa, and Université d’Agadez—all public universities.

Founded in 2013 by renowned educationist and philanthropist Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, MAAUN is the first English-language university in the Niger Republic. Since its establishment, the institution has graduated over 20,000 students who are currently contributing to various sectors across Africa and beyond.

The university presently hosts thousands of students from different parts of the world, reflecting its growing international profile and commitment to global academic standards.

The AD Scientific Index is a global ranking and analysis system that evaluates academic productivity and scientific impact using near real-time data. It assesses 24,672 institutions worldwide, including universities, research centers, companies, and hospitals, based on measurable scientific performance indicators.

Reacting to the ranking, the Association of African Private Universities congratulated MAAUN on the achievement. The commendation was delivered by the association’s Deputy Secretary General, Dr. Salisou Mamoudou.

Dr. Mamoudou described the ranking as a reflection of MAAUN’s consistent commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and institutional development. He noted that the university has set a strong benchmark for higher education growth in the Niger Republic and encouraged other public and private universities across Africa to emulate its standards.

The ranking further reinforces MAAUN’s position as a leading private university in West Africa and highlights the growing impact of private higher education institutions in advancing academic quality and research visibility on the continent.
