The approval from Nigeria’s apex medical regulatory body comes barely two weeks after the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted full accreditation to the same programme via a letter dated April 7, 2026.
The delegation conducted a comprehensive assessment of the college’s facilities, which included the basic medical sciences, basic clinical sciences, and clinical sciences departments.
The MDCN team inspected other units, including Human Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Physiology, Community Medicine, Anatomic Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Microbial Pathology, as well as Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
The Provost of FUTA College of Health Sciences, Prof. Biodun Olagbuji, and Deputy Provost, Prof. Victor Ukwenya, presented a detailed overview of the college to the visiting team, focusing on the enabling statute, organogram, and operating guidelines governing the institution.
They emphasised that the deliberate design and organisation of the college aims to foster integration between preclinical and clinical training while ensuring administrative efficiency.
With the delegation also extending its inspection to the FUTA Teaching Hospital, where the team was received by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Olusegun Ojo, who described the MDCN’s approval as an enormous achievement for the university.
During the hospital visit, the evaluators assessed the clinical training infrastructure that serves as the critical interface between basic science education and patient care delivery.
According to him, the development represents a milestone that will in no small measure give students the assurance and confidence to progress in their medical education journey.
Speaking during the engagement with university management led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Adenike Oladiji, Dr Nwakanma expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by the university.
He noted that the engagement was productive and emphasised the importance of aligning the college’s operations with the regulatory standards set by the council.
Nwakanma further stated that the Council remains committed to supporting institutions through the accreditation process and ensuring that medical and dental education in Nigeria meets global best practices.
In her address, Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji disclosed that university management had worked diligently to put in place the necessary structures and facilities required for the accreditation exercise.
Oladiji emphasised that the university remains fully committed to excellence in medical education and is determined to ensure that all standards stipulated by the Council are met and implemented in order to strengthen the College of Health Sciences.
The Vice Chancellor also used the occasion to appreciate the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for mobilising key leaders of the kingdom to contribute to the development of FUTA and its medical programme.
