Niger Delta students’ union reaffirms commitment to peace, academic excellence

The Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG) has renewed its commitment to championing youth-led peace initiatives across the Niger Delta, while intensifying efforts to promote academic excellence and student welfare in the region.

The resolve was reiterated by the newly elected National President of NIDSUG, Comrade Chika Precious Uchechukwu, during his acceptance speech in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, shortly after emerging as the winner of the union’s keenly contested national elections.

Uchechukwu said the new leadership of the students’ body would prioritise constructive engagement, sustained dialogue, and targeted programmes aimed at curbing youth restiveness, stressing that lasting peace remains a critical foundation for educational growth and regional development.

According to him, the Niger Delta is a region of immense potential, but one that continues to grapple with environmental degradation, underdevelopment, and socio-economic challenges that have a direct impact on students and young people.

“We are not just students; we are the intellectual vanguard of a region brimming with potential yet beset by complex realities,” Uchechukwu said. “We carry the dreams of our communities, communities that bear the weight of environmental strain, underdevelopment, and the constant quest for equitable resource control.”

He noted that his administration would be anchored on inclusive governance, strategic advocacy, academic excellence, and student empowerment, adding that NIDSUG would move “beyond lamentation to strategic, data-driven advocacy” in addressing issues affecting students in the Niger Delta.

As part of efforts to improve student welfare, the NIDSUG president pledged to actively engage key institutions and stakeholders, including university authorities, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, and other relevant bodies.

He said such engagements would be geared towards securing scholarships, internship opportunities, and improved educational infrastructure for students across the region.

Uchechukwu also emphasised collaboration as a key driver of his administration’s agenda, promising programmes designed to enhance the quality of education, instil moral values, and build leadership and entrepreneurial skills among students.

“With a profound sense of humility, immense gratitude, and a heart burdened by the responsibility you have placed upon it, I stand before you today to formally accept the office of President of the Niger Delta Students Union Government,” he stated.

Earlier, the Chief Returning Officer of the NIDSUG elections, Pastor Tanam Gospel, announced the results in line with Section 29F of the Niger Delta Students Union Government Constitution, 2011, declaring Comrade Chika Precious Uchechukwu as the duly elected National President of the union.

Gospel also announced other members of the newly elected national executive council. They include Comrade Onorhivwe Destiny as National Vice President (Administration); Assor Favour as National Vice President (Projects); Owonifa Josephine Tolulope as National Vice President (West); and Ojikpong Alexander as National Vice President (North).

Other key officials are Aighowamhi O. Mascot, National Secretary-General; Sunyene Patrick Udofia, Assistant Secretary; Wenibo Solomon Peaceful, National Treasurer; Jackson Isuho Okon, Financial Secretary; and Frederick Bassey Ita, National Public Relations Officer.

The election and inauguration of the new leadership, stakeholders believe, mark a fresh chapter for NIDSUG as it seeks to reposition itself as a strong voice for peace, academic excellence, and sustainable development among students of the Niger Delta.
