NUC approves Imo University of Innovation, Science and Technology

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the University of Innovation, Science and Technology in Omuma, Imo State.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor of Imo State on Public Enlightenment, Prince Eze Ugochukwu, and made available to The Guardian on Tuesday, Governor Hope Uzodimma expressed joy over the approval, stating that it enables the state to own its fourth university within its boundary.

Other state-owned universities are the Imo State University (IMSU), the Imo State University of Agriculture and Environment, and the Kingsley Ozumba University (KOMU).

He informed that the university would drive digital innovation and entrepreneurship, among other special areas of scientific endeavours.

The new university builds on the success of the Skillup Imo Initiative, which has trained over 50,000 young people in various digital and entrepreneurial skills.

While receiving the Certificate of Approval on Monday, Uzodimma said, “Our goal is to ensure our graduates are not just job seekers but creators of opportunities, ready to compete on a global stage.”

He opined that Imo State had taken a bold step towards shaping its digital future with the establishment, noting that the investment was aimed at transforming the vision and making the youths entrepreneurs, innovators, and globally competitive professionals, stressing that education, technology, and human capital development would be the basis.

He noted that the university would upscale the 50,000 youths trained through the state’s SkillUp Imo Initiative in various digital and entrepreneurial skills.

While highlighting the substantial financial investment, he emphasised the long-term benefits.

“The institution is expected to boost human capital development, stimulate economic growth, and position Imo State as a hub for innovation and technology. By focusing on science, technology, and entrepreneurship, the University of Innovation, Science and Technology aims to prepare a future-ready workforce capable of addressing modern economic demands,” he maintained.

“This strategic move underscores Imo State’s commitment to fostering a digitally empowered generation, setting the stage for sustainable economic progress and global competitiveness.

“With this approval, Imo State further strengthens its position as a hub for technological advancement and youth empowerment in Nigeria, setting a clear path toward a knowledge-driven economy anchored on innovation, science, and enterprise,” he declared.
