Yobe ASUU rejects wage adjustment, demands full settlement to end strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Yobe State University has announced its continued strike action, asserting that the state government’s implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage adjustment in July falls short of meeting the union’s broader demands.

Speaking in Damaturu on Monday, ASUU Chairman Dr. Ahmed Karage clarified that while the wage adjustment was a welcome gesture, it was not sufficient to warrant a suspension of the strike. “Although the consequential adjustment for the ₦70,000 minimum wage was implemented in July, the union’s other demands have not been met,” he said.

Karage stressed that key issues—including implementation of academic promotions approved by the university council and the payment of accumulated promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025—remain unresolved. He also pointed to outstanding arrears related to minimum wage adjustments between 2019 and 2024, salary awards for academic ranks from 2023 to 2025, and unpaid wage arrears from January 2024 to June 2025.

While reaffirming the union’s position, Karage appealed to the public for understanding. “The strike will be called off only after a Memorandum of Understanding is signed between the union and the state government,” he stated.
