NNPC to continue oil explorations in Lake Chad Basin despite insurgency

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Emmanuel Kachikwu has said that the Federal Government will continue with its “oil and gas explorations” in the Lake Chad Basin of Borno state; despite recent Boko Haram attacks in the region.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Emmanuel Kachikwu has said that the Federal Government will continue with its “oil and gas explorations” in the Lake Chad Basin of Borno state; despite recent Boko Haram attacks in the region.
 
Kachikwu announced Government’s explorations, when he led a high-powered delegation of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources; and
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to condole members and community of University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) at the institution, Senate building at the weekend.

Last Tuesday’s Boko Haram ambush and attacks claimed the lives of over 48 civilians, vigilantes and soldiers in Magumeri Local Government Areas of Borno state.

Aliyu said the significance of the prospects for oil and gas in the region; was to sustain the production and refining of petroleum
products; and increase the nation’s oil reserve base.
 
“This is inevitable; particularly in hiccups like this,” said Aliyu.Responding the UNIMAID Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, acknowledged that his colleagues died in the spirit of contributing to national development, noting that he is very much worried on how to replace them.“I am requesting for special scholarship…to replace them,” he asked the Minister.

The Petroleum Ministry and the NNPC have assured that they will support the University security wise and academically, particularly in research and development of the North-East sub-region of the country.
