TCN expands transmission capacity with 300MVA upgrade

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has increased electricity transmission capacity in Abuja with the commissioning of a 300MVA power transformer at its Katampe Transmission Substation.

The new 300MVA 330/132kV transformer, commissioned on Sunday, raises the substation’s capacity from 450MVA to 750MVA, marking a significant upgrade in the Federal Capital Territory’s power infrastructure.

With the expansion, more electricity is now available for the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to offtake and distribute to homes, businesses and industries across Abuja and surrounding areas.

Speaking at the commissioning, the General Manager (Transmission), Abuja Region, Musa Shuaibu, said the project reflects TCN’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the national grid.

He noted that the additional capacity would support increased power delivery, improve grid stability and enhance electricity supply to key load centres.

“This installation underscores our resolve to continue expanding the transmission network to meet growing demand and improve service delivery,” Shuaibu said.

The project was executed under a collaborative initiative between TCN and the World Bank, aimed at rehabilitating and upgrading Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure.

The development comes amid broader efforts to address longstanding bottlenecks in the power sector, particularly constraints within the transmission segment that have often limited the evacuation of generated electricity.

With the new transformer in place, there are indications of improved supply reliability in some parts of Abuja, provided that distribution networks effectively absorb and deliver the additional capacity to end users.
