The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it plans to turn to ordinary Nigerians for financial support as it prepares for the 2027 general elections, in what the party describes as an effort to reduce the influence of wealthy individuals in politics.

Seriake Dickson, national leader of the NDC, disclosed the plan during an appearance on Arise News’ Prime Time, saying Nigerians would be able to contribute as little as N1,000 towards the party’s activities.

Dickson argued that allowing political parties to depend heavily on wealthy donors could give powerful individuals undue influence over the political process and governance.

“You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires,” he said, arguing that ordinary Nigerians should have a greater role in financing political activities.
According to the NDC leader, the proposed grassroots funding model would allow Nigerians to make small contributions, including N1,000 and N2,000, to support the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Dickson also said the party was consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council and would announce its members soon.He further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other relevant institutions to ensure that the 2027 elections are free, fair and credible.

The NDC’s position comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with campaign financing expected to remain a major issue in the contest for political power.The party has also recently faced allegations surrounding its candidate selection and funding processes, allegations its national publicity secretary, Osa Director, dismissed as misinformation and propaganda from disgruntled elements.

With its proposed donation model, the NDC says it wants to build a campaign that draws financial support from a broad base of Nigerians rather than relying primarily on wealthy political financiers.
