Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) has awarded a contract for the production of fodder seeds worth N88 million, including Gambia grass, among other seeds native to tropical Africa.

Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) has awarded a contract for the production of fodder seeds worth N88 million, including Gambia grass, among other seeds native to tropical Africa.

The livestock facility will be established on a 20-hectare seed multiplication plot at Dudduru Grazing Reserve in Ajingi Local Government Area of the state.

The state coordinator of KSADP, Mallam Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, told journalists at the weekend that the contract, which was awarded to the National Animal Production Research Institute, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, would end seasonal migration of herders from the North to the South in search of pastures.

Mallam Ibrahim emphasised that the contract for seed multiplication plots was the backbone of the KSADP’s planned support for investment in commercial fodder production, in partnership with the private sector.

Besides the Dudduru location, the coordinator disclosed that similar fodder seeds would be cultivated at Dansoshiya forest, in Kiru Local Government area of the state, where about 4,000 hectares of pasture would be occupied to transform the forest into a huge grazing reserve.

By designed, Mallam Ibrahim explained that no fewer than 5,000 smallholder farmers would be supported to develop pasture land for livestock production.

According to him, “Fodder crops are key in the development of Nigeria’s livestock industry because the bulk of the animal protein, especially milk and meat derives from cattle and small ruminants, which are essentially dependent on these crops.”
