Against the backdrop of rot and decay in schools, old students have been called upon to rescue their alma mater from deterioration and total collapse.

They have also been enjoined to ensure that students in their former schools get good education that will enable them compete with peers in any part of the world, be it in higher institutions of learning or at workplaces.

The President-General of Anglican Boys Old Students Association (AGSUOBA), Dr. Geoff Ohen, made the call when the Lagos State chapter of the association hosted him.

Ohen recalled that from 1983 when he acquired Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Benin, he had gone ahead to acquire more in the field of medicine, stressing that all the feats would not have been possible if not for the solid foundation given to him at Anglican Boys Grammar School, Ubulu-Uku.

He told the gathering that whichever height they had attained, they should not forget their alma mater, saying it is the foundation upon which their successes and achievements had been built.

He warned that turning their backs on their alma mater could be dangerous, as it would amount to mortgaging the future of children, grandchildren and many generations to come.

Recalling his secondary school days, he said: “If not for Anglican Grammar Ubulu-Uku, I don’t think I will be where I am today because our formative years at school prepared us for what we have become today. All other schools I passed through and academic excellence achieved are only built on the good foundation laid at Anglican Grammar School, Ubulu Uku.

“Similarly, many of us who attended the school have risen to great heights in various spheres of life. What is now left for us is to give back to our alma mater, our strong foundation.”

He said that was the reason he gladly accepted to serve as the President-General of the association, to galvanise all members in Nigeria and other parts of the world to ensure that the school remains vibrant and solid as the foundation for students.

He, however, said he could not do it alone and called on members, home and abroad, to rally round him and other members of the executive body to achieve success.

He said: “I see my role as just to provide leadership. We are all in it together.
Given where Anglican is today, there is a lot we can contribute to make it better, not for ourselves but for our children and our children’s children. I call on all of you to please assist me and my executive will not let you down.”

Earlier, the President of the Lagos chapter of the association, Mr. Okey Odibeli, congratulated Ohen on his election and urged the chapter to rall round him to achieve success.
