The Federal Government has been urged to implement its import prohibition law on agricultural produce, in order to encourage farmers, boost production and maximise profit.

The Federal Government has been urged to implement its import prohibition law on agricultural produce, in order to encourage farmers, boost production and maximise profit.

The use of import prohibition as a policy in the country was designed to promote local industry, provide employment among others.

National President, Association of Small Business Owner of Nigeria (ASBON), Dr. Femi Egbesola, who gave the advice at a press conference, in Ikeja, to herald its second SME National Business Awards 2018, said if the law is enforced, it will discourage reliance on imported agric produce.

“As many people are embracing SMEs, importation of products has reduced. Nigerian rice is flooding the market, but they are packaged as foreign rice. Likewise, garri and other foods are branded as if they were imported. Government needs to introduce commodity purchase programme as we had it during the era of President Shehu Shagari. This will help to offtake farm produce, which will encourage more farmers to cultivate more and improve the sector,” he said.

Egbesola said the award would hold on December 19. He added that Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, will deliver a keynote address titled: ‘Analysis of Government Policies and Initiatives Toward Entrepreneurship Development in Nigeria-Prospects, Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward.’ He disclosed that 18 nominees would be awarded.
