BMW’s all-new X3 mid-size SUV debuts

BMW has revealed its latest X3 mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV), which is expected to take on the likes of Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC.

According to the automaker, the X3 remains a statement of unlimited opportunities and an expression of sheer presence and freedom.

Debuting with more luxury than the previous-generation, the all-new X3 is powered by a range of engines – including a powerful 355bhp 3.0-litre petrol projected to offer good levels of economy as well as exceptional performance.

The entire X3 sits on a new platform, meaning that it is now 61mm longer, 17mm wider and 16mm higher than the car it replaces.

Despite these increases, it is lighter than the outgoing X3, and offers a perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

“Thanks to partially autonomous driving and the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive, it offers supreme ride comfort both on and off the road. It therefore redefines the benchmarks in its class and makes one thing unmistakably clear: there is a great difference in how you reach your destinations,” the company said in a statement.

A large kidney grille takes pride of place at the front of the car, while angular rear lights give the car a distinctive dynamic look.
There are a range of trim levels to choose from.

The Base SE-spec cars still get a variety of standard equipment, including LED headlamps and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Higher-grade xLine vehicles receive chunkier bumpers and 19-inch alloys, while top specification M Sport X3s gain their own unique bumper design and optional blue-painted brake callipers.

A range of semi-autonomous driver assistance systems can also be specified. These include Active Cruise Control, Driving Assistant Plus and Lane Change Assistant.

Similar to the current-generation 7 Series and 5 Series, the new X3 also features gesture control functions allowing the driver to operate elements of the infotainment using simple hand gestures.
