Court remands 85-year-old man in prison over alleged murder

A Magistrate Court in Igbosere has remanded an 85-year-old man, Ishau Ogunlana to Prison over alleged murder.

He was remanded alongside two others. They are Taofeek Omidina, 48, and Ahmed Onabanjo, 42. Magistrate O. M. Ajayi remanded them following accusations of murder leveled against them by the police.

The court had rejected Ogunlana’s application for bail on the ground of old age and remanded them following an application by prosecuting counsel, Sergeant Innocent Odugbo.

“They are reasonably suspected to have committed the offences of conspiracy, murder, wounding and unlawful possession of live cartridge, acts that led to the disturbance of public peace on April 23, 2016,” Odugbo said.

The court also rejected the application of the suspects’ counsel, Emmanuel Danye, who applied for Ogunlana to be remanded in police custody.

The three men were alleged to have shot one Ogunniyi to death on April 23, at about 1: 40pm somewhere around Agunfoye Idiorogbo, Igbogbo in Ikorodu area of Lagos.

Magistrate Ajayi ordered their remand in Ikoyi Prison, till June 17, pending the advice from the Lagos Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The accused were also said to have unlawfully inflicted several degrees of gun shot wounds on one Gbenga Ajadi.

The police also claimed that the trio “did unlawfully and illegally have in your possession live cartridge without a license or permit duly issued to you by the Inspector-General of Police.”

According to the police, the five-count offence against the defendants are punishable under Sections 220, 221, 231, 244, 328(d) and 409 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
