As the world moves to break biases and stereotypes against women and the girl-child, experts have disclosed that with determination and right motivation, more Nigerian girls will succeed in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and courses.

At a career-talk organised for secondary school girls in all the three host communities of the Segilola Gold Project to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD), the group charged Nigerian girls to take up the challenge of pursuing a career in STEM.

The speakers spoke on the present gender gap in STEM fields and encouraged the girls to consider STEM fields as a viable option when making their academic and career decisions.

In her welcome address, Chairperson, Atakumosa East local government, Folusho Adekoya, encouraged the girls to “break the bias and walk in the footsteps of Nigerian women who have distinguished themselves in their fields, broken biases, endured and surmounted several challenges to pave the way for younger generations.”

Speaking on the opportunities available in STEM, Prof. Abimbola Iyanda, professor of computer science and engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, narrated her experience and encouraged the girls to be inquisitive, put no limits on what they can become and make informed decisions regarding studying in the STEM field.

Deputy Director, Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Banke Onoak, enjoined the girls to be persistent, disciplined and always strive for excellence in whatever they do. She explained that those are the qualities required to succeed and remain at the top.

A panel of female employees in the SROL management team, comprising Mary Oladele, Process Excellence Supervisor; Samantha Kusi-Appiah, Metallurgist; Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, Community Relations Manager and Odunayo Adeniji, HR Manager, discussed issues affecting girls’ involvement in STEM and urged participants to see beyond the present challenges, build themselves with the right attitude and skills to succeed.
