Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State has approved plans to hire 1,800 senior secondary school teachers.

The Kwara State Government has announced plans to recruit 1,800 teachers, 100 non-teaching staff, and 200 security guards for senior secondary schools across the state. This initiative, approved by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, aims to address the shortage of teaching staff, particularly in rural areas.

Bello Tauheed Abubakar, Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), revealed in a statement that the recruitment process would prioritise teachers of STEM subjects, as well as specific Art and Commercial subjects, to bridge the resource gap in underserved schools.

According to Abubakar, applications will be submitted online, with strict qualifications criteria. Candidates must possess a university degree in education or relevant subjects with a teaching certificate, such as B.Ed, B.Sc. Ed, B.A. Ed, or NCE. Applicants without these qualifications will not be considered.

Other requirements include:

  • Proof of local government of origin and residence.
  • An upper age limit of 35 years as of 31 January 2025.
  • Passing a computer-based test (CBT) and subsequent interviews.
  • Undergoing a drug test to ensure the suitability of candidates.

Applicants will also undergo peer teaching exercises to assess their practical teaching skills.

The recruitment exercise is designed to prioritise rural schools that face acute shortages of teachers. Additionally, the hiring of security guards underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring safer learning environments.

Abubakar commended Governor Abdulrazaq for his administration’s consistent investment in public education, which he described as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the sector.
