Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) has reassured students of the university of its commitment to their welfare as it marks its 35th anniversary.
Speaking at a news conference to announce activities for LASUSU’s 35th anniversary, union President Joldie Adebobola, said that the union has achieved significant progress since its inception, assuring that more impactful programmes that will assist students will be unveiled.
He stressed that the union remained committed to student welfare, leadership, and inclusivity.
He highlighted his administration’s achievements, including landmark physical projects and flagship programmes that have improved the student experience.
He said, “Some of the notable projects executed by the administration include the construction of sitting arenas in the Faculties of Education and Management Sciences, installation of digital screenboards, and mounting of solar-powered streetlights. The union has also implemented programs such as LASUSU Mindwave, a mental health awareness summit, and LASUSU Freshers’ Week, a dynamic welcome campaign for new students.”
The union leader further mentioned that it achieved significant victories for students, including the reduction of Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) fees from N10,000 to N1,000 and also the cancellation of CBT fees for 200L to 400L students.
Adebobola, however, said that several other programmes are waiting to be executed, among which are Ability Unleashed, a life-changing inclusion program for students with disabilities, and LASUSU Trade Fair, which will spotlight and support student entrepreneurs.
“The union is also setting the groundwork for the formal launch of the LASUSU Brigade, a disciplined body that will combine ceremonial excellence, assistance in traffic control and safety, and support for union logistics and campus order,” he added.
The week-long celebration began with a press conference to mark the 35th anniversary celebration week, featuring events such as the anniversary lecture themed ‘Redefining Student Leadership in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects’, sports day, and Ojude LASU, which celebrated culture, identity, and diversity on campus.
