Ekocity kicks off campaign to clean Lagos

In an effort contribute its quota to the cleanliness of Lagos State, Ekocity Media Ltd, a Lagos based media outfit and publishers of www.ekocitymagazine.com chose Nigeria’s 56th Independence Day anniversary to flag off her #PickaBottlePickaNylon Campaign. The campaign is aimed at collaborating Lagos State government efforts at keeping Lagos clean as well as creating awareness, sensitization of Lagos residents on the importance of maintaining a clean environment and highlighting the best methods for waste disposal.

The Ekocity team and some #PickaBottlePickaNylon Volunteers flagged off the campaign by cleaning a clogged drainage at Kilo, Surulere, Lagos. Afterwards, the team moved to Alausa, Ikeja where they sensitized the public on the need to keep Lagos Clean by carrying placards bearing inscriptions, “Keep Lagos Clean”, “Picking a Bottle and Nylon keeps flood away”, “Reuse, Reduce and Recycle” and “Save lives and properties from flooding”.

The #PickaBottlePickaNyloncampaign is hinged on the realization that Nylons and PET bottles constitute a critical mass of the wastes that litter Lagos roads, streets and the waterways. The campaign urges every Lagos residents to pick up and properly dispose a PET bottles and Nylons, as the gesture will reduce the number of litters by 15million given that Lagos population is currently estimated at 21 million.

In a short interview, the convener of #PickaBottlePickaNylon Campaign, Mr. Fawumi Abiodun stated that interaction with the members of the public revealed the need to make waste bins available at every major bus stop in Lagos. He further stressed continuous awareness and sensitization of the public on effective waste disposal methods as a lasting strategy to enthroning a culture of cleanliness among Lagos residents. He assured that Ekocity is opened to partnerships and will seek support from appropriate government institutions, private organisations towards achieving an eco-friendly Lagos. The next clean up date and location by the #PickaBottlePickaNylon team will be announced on the campaign website www.ekocitymagazine.com/cleanlagos.
