THE second generation VW Tiguan will make its global debut at the 2015 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September, replacing the current seven-year-old PQ35-based model.

Along with a long-wheelbase variant that will be called ‘VW Tiguan XL’ and have seating arrangement for seven passengers, a coupe-styled derivative of the crossover has also been planned.

A report by Autocar said VW is mulling a performance-oriented Tiguan Coupe R for 2018, some 12 months after the Tiguan CC will be launched.

It will directly compete with the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG, Audi RS Q3 and the upcoming BMW X2 M and Range Rover Evoque SVR.

It would be likely powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that could produce nearly 300 bhp and 280 lb.-ft.

(380 Nm) of torque. The performance-oriented crossover will get a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, 4WD system and an electronic torque vectoring system as well.

It will be underpinned with VW’s MQB platform. Although nothing official has been stated by the company, the British publication writes that the 2018 Tiguan Coupe R would be able to match the Golf R Estate’s 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.1 seconds.

As seen in rendering image above, the Coupe R should have the same design as the Tiguan CC, with angular lines, sloping roofline and a more prominent C-pillar treatment.

However, apart from the performance upgrades, it will also receive some interior updates such an active instrument display, head-up display (HUD) and a full selection of camera-aided safety features, including an emergency braking function.
