Experts in the education sector have called for proper education on emerging environmental health hazards in the country.
The Pro-chancellor, Redeemers’ University, Ede, Ezekiel Odeyemi; Vice Chancellor, Precious Cornerstone University (PCU), Ibadan, Prof. Julius Oloke; and a Professor of Environment and Health Physics, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Joshua Ojo, said the environment has impacts on health.
They made the call at the eighth national conference on Environment and health held at PCU.
Ojo, at the conference organised by the Living Science Foundation, said: “We need to educate people on the need to understand the importance of a healthy environment and the peculiar environmental hazards.
‘’To ensure sustainable development, it is imperative to adopt a holistic approach in managing the three dimensions of economy, socials, and the environment, with health being the ultimate bottom-line. The only way to achieve this is to bring together relevant stakeholders from various sectors, encourage them to share their peculiar experiences, so that the required solutions, customised for our climate, may emerge.’’
Odeyemi, who is the Chairman of the Foundation, said: “Our national interest is best served by primary prevention of diseases. This entails managing the environment in a way that minimises exposures that lead to diseases, rather than struggling to later deal with the aftermath of such exposures through sophisticated technologies that, in any case, have to be sourced from abroad at considerable costs.
Oloke, who was represented by Prof. Olugboyega Oyeranti, said there is an urgent need for proper education on environmental health hazards.
