FOMWAN proffers solution to moral decadence among youths

The Federation of Muslim Women Association In Nigeria (FOMWAN) has assumed the moral responsibility of ensuring that the values that are the backbone of traditional family systems are sustained.

The group however urged parents religious organization and government at all level to curb the threat of moral decadence amongst Nigeria youth, nothing that it is a dreadful disease for any country.

Speaking doing the formal opening ceremony of FOMWAN yearly South-West zonal youth camp in Lagos, The South West Zonal Coordinator of FOMWAN, Alhaja Nimotallah Tafa Salam said the theme of the event ‘ Moral decadence in the society: causes, effects and solution’ was chosen due to the happenings in the society which is not ideal for a decent country.


She said, camp would orientate the Muslim girl child with the correct Islamic orientation, curb them from all sort of social vices and encourage them to participate in building the society.

“We have decided to give our youth the right orientation because we getting old, we want our youth to continue our good work. That is why we decided to equip them with basic knowledge that will make them to be good ambassador of Islam and Nigeria.

She urged Nigeria government to permit Muslim girls put on their hijabs in school and anywhere they find themselves in the society noting that the dressing of a Muslim woman is incomplete without hijab.

“There is nothing wrong in the use of hiab to school by girl child. Muslim women were enjoined by Allah to dress well by covering all part of their body in order to prevent harassment. That makes it necessary for our young girls to cultivate the habit of wearing hijab from youth.. We are not mandating the putting on of hijab on children of other religion, we want only Muslim students”

The Ameerah, FOMWAN Lagos Chapter, Dr. Alimah Shadia Egberongbe, said the camp is organizes in order to catch the children young and equip them with adequate knowledge, which will help them to combat youth unrest. “We believe it is easier to catch them young, to prevent them from going astray. At the camp they will be lectured on negative influence on the lives and development of youths such as effect of drug abuse, addiction to social media and spiritual upliftment.

She urged the society to hold on to faith in order to combat societal vices and the government should collaborate with religious organization in order to reach out to the grassroots.

“FOMWAN has made series of advocacy on moral decadency but we cannot do it alone, the society and government have to be involve in order to reach out to the grassroots,”

The Wife of Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat represented by The Director Admin and Human Resources Office of, Hajia Olaide Ibrahim commended the group on the laudable initiative. Saying theme of the camp is apt and timely coming at a time when the society is morally bankrupt.

“Moral decadence in our society today is borne out of inappropriate parenting, parent should endeavor to stand up to the task of good parenting.She urged Nigeria youths to shun all forms of social vices and take their parent as their confidante.


The Chairman Mainland Local Government, Hon. Rashidat Omolola Essien represented by The Majority Leader, Mainland LG, Hon Toyin Bamgboye urged the youths to obey their parents and be wary of peer pressure.

Assistant Coordinator, Ministry of affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Mrs Omolara Dava in her goodwill message noted three ways to attain happiness as purpose of existence, kindness to oneself and kindness to others.

She advised the youth to desist from following fashion trends.” Instead of following fashion trends, set achievable goals for yourself. The trends you are dying to keep up with were all started by someone somehow. And that’s their identity. We shouldn’t lose our identity whenever a new style hits the market”.
