Govt partners World Bank to boost mother, child health in states

In a bid to ensure that the current challenges of limited resources to states as a result of recent dwindling of incomes from oil does not have much effect on primary healthcare services, the Federal Government has embarked on an ambitious reform programme in the health sector through the Saving One Million Lives (SOML) initiative.

Development partners, including the World Bank, are providing support to SOML through a Program for Results (PforR) initiative, which will be implemented at the states.

Speaking at the end of a two-day workshop titled, Saving One Million Lives (SOML), simultaneously held in both Ibadan and Enugu, the Chief Responsibility Officer and Team Leader of Mothergold, facilitators of the workshop, Dr. Adesina Fagbenro-Byron, stated that global and local partnerships are the proven way of leveraging resources to meet the human development needs of society, especially in health and social services sectors.

“Nigeria now has both national and international consensus on the need to aim for Universal Health Coverage and improve maternal and child health, hence the country’s justification for partnerships for development in the health sector, which includes a recognition that health of women and children will be taken as an accurate gauge of the effectiveness of health service delivery systems.
