Group provides solar power, school infrastructure to Arigidi Akoko community

The Arigidi Akoko Renewal Group (AARG), a non-governmental and non-partisan development organisation comprising indigenous sons and daughters of Arigidi Akoko resident across Nigeria and the diaspora, has completed and handed over several strategic community development projects to the people of Arigidi Akoko.

The projects, located within Arigidi Akoko community in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State, are aimed at advancing grassroots development and social wellbeing.

The completion and donation of the projects were recently announced in an official statement jointly signed by the group’s President, Dr. Johnson Yaya; the Secretary, Mr Seun Komolafe, and a member of the Project Coordination Team, Prince Olugbenga Olanipekun. The statement underscored the group’s collective commitment to the sustainable development and renewal of its ancestral homeland.

According to the release, AARG formally informed the Arigidi Akoko community of the successful execution of key developmental interventions designed to enhance public safety, strengthen educational infrastructure and improve the overall quality of life of residents. The group noted that the projects were conceived in response to identified community needs and implemented as part of its broader vision to support inclusive growth, civic responsibility and long-term community resilience.

AARG further reaffirmed its dedication to partnering with community stakeholders, traditional institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that the benefits of the projects are sustained and that future initiatives continue to address pressing developmental challenges within Arigidi Akoko.

A major component of the intervention is the installation of solar-powered street lighting. As part of its commitment to improving public safety and infrastructure, the group financed the procurement, donation and installation of 90 200-watt solar street lights across key high-traffic areas of the town. The lighting project stretches across major corridors linking Agbaluku Junction to Okeagbe Junction, onward to Palace Junction, through Obalende to Okebola Junction, and along the Imo Arigidi Road axis.

The initiative is expected to significantly enhance night-time visibility, strengthen community security and stimulate social and economic activities after dusk. The group explained that the adoption of solar technology reflects its commitment to environmentally sustainable solutions while ensuring reliable lighting in areas with limited or inconsistent electricity supply. Beyond improving road safety for motorists and pedestrians, the project is projected to deter criminal activity, extend business hours for traders and enhance residents’ sense of security and wellbeing.

In the education sector, AARG undertook a targeted intervention aimed at strengthening teaching and learning outcomes in public secondary schools within the community. Recognising that access to quality learning materials remains a critical factor in academic performance, the group donated a wide range of up-to-date textbooks covering key subjects across all class levels.

The textbooks were distributed to Okota High School, Akoko Anglican Grammar School and Ajiroke Technical High School, all in Arigidi Akoko. The intervention is intended to support students’ academic needs while easing the burden on teachers by providing adequate instructional resources to improve lesson delivery and learning outcomes.

According to the group, the donation is expected to enhance classroom engagement, encourage independent study and better prepare students for internal and external examinations. It added that the initiative reflects its broader vision of investing in education as a foundation for sustainable community development and long-term social progress.
