Consultant urges Nigerians to ensure regular medical check up

A Consultant, Dr Funmi Okunsaya, on Saturday advised Lagos residents to go for regular medical check-up to ascertain the true status of their health.

Okunsaya, who works with Tasly Pharmaceutical Lagos, gave the advice on the sidelines of a `Cleanup Papa Ajao exercise and free medical Consultation’ organised by Team Clean-up Nigeria Initiative in Lagos.

Okunsanya said that regular medical check-up would facilitate early detection and treatment of most ailments.

“We need these community people to always come out of their shell to contribute to the environmental sanitation around them

“On the medical aspect in this community, the hygiene is poor, they have a lot of health issues and their health statistics shows that it’s 70 percent down, the health report is not too encouraging.

“People here can always do better with their health, hygiene and improve on their environment,” she said.

The Coordinator First Sight, an Environmental NGO, Mrs Buky Abdul, called on people in the local communities to imbibe the culture of sustaining a clean environment for their wellbeing.

“Our environment is yet to reach the acceptable level, all hands must be on deck to ensure that our environment is safe and secure from any sudden outbreak of diseases,’’ Abdul said.

Mr Alex Akhigbe of Passion House, one of the collaborating NGO, urged other communities to embark on a cleanup exercise for the good of their community.

“I advise that communities should not always wait for government to clean up their environment or set aside cleanup days for such.

Every day we should ensure that our environment are kept clean and free from filth.

It is on this note, that Passion House embarks on environmental sustainability projects in communities; engaging volunteers to commit their time toward keeping the environment clean.

Spreading awareness about environmental sustainability is imperative,’’ Akhigbe said.

No fewer than 20 streets in the community were cleaned up by the group and other volunteers while the Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) were on ground to ensure prompt evacuation of refuse generated during the exercise.

Long lasting insecticide treated mosquitoes nets were also given to residents of the community after the exercise.
